People come to veterinary medicine to practice good medicine and care for animals well. Whether they can do that reliably, on a hard day and over a whole career, has less to do with individual grit than with how the practice around them is built.
We work with veterinary clinics on assessment, consulting, and speaking. We measure the conditions inside a practice and help leaders act on what the data shows.
A cultural anthropologist with a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Florida's Bureau of Economic and Business Research. He built the Veterinary Culture Panel, a diagnostic instrument that treats workplace culture as a structural property of veterinary practices rather than a personal failing of the people inside them. He speaks and delivers continuing education on organizational justice and psychological safety.
Received his DVM from Colorado State in 1992 and completed a small animal surgery residency at the University of Minnesota in 1996. He owned Gallatin Veterinary Hospital in Bozeman, Montana from 2006 to 2020. Fourteen years of making these decisions himself, with real staff and a real payroll.
Not happiness. Not comfort. The state of a life in which a person is able to do well the thing they are capable of doing.
Aristotle's argument was that flourishing is not a mood or a reward. It is an activity, doing what you are capable of, well, across a life. And it cannot be reached by effort alone. It requires conditions: the circumstances that make good work possible in the first place.
A person of real skill and real character, placed in circumstances that prevent good work, does not flourish. They endure.
The Veterinary Culture Panel, a diagnostic measuring eight dimensions of organizational health, with every result split by role.
Reading what the results mean, deciding what to build on and what to address first, and shaping a plan that fits the practice.
Culture due diligence before a sale closes, and re-measurement afterward, for owners preparing to sell and buyers who want to know what they're acquiring.
Sessions for state VMAs, conferences, and practice groups on organizational justice, psychological safety, and how good practices are built.
No pitches. Just the columns and research as they're published.
We're working with a small number of pilot clinics this year, and we take speaking and CE bookings for VMAs, conferences, and practice groups.
