Veterinary Fairness Index (VFI)

The Veterinary Fairness Index translates complex organizational justice theory into a practical tool tailored for veterinary medicine. It quantifies how veterinary professionals perceive fairness in their workplace across the four pillars of justice:

  • Distributive fairness – Are pay, promotions, schedules, and workloads allocated equitably? Does compensation reflect contributions?

  • Procedural fairness – Are decision‑making processes consistent, unbiase,d and transparent? Do team members feel they have a voice in decisions that affect them?

  • Interpersonal fairness – Do colleagues and leaders treat each other with respect and dignity? Are difficult conversations handled empathetically?

  • Informational fairness – Do team members receive adequate, honest explanations for decisions and changes? Is information about policies and performance shared openly?

The VFI uses confidential surveys and analytics to convert these subjective perceptions into objective data. By calculating scores for each pillar and an overall fairness index, it reveals strengths and pressure points within a clinic, hospital, or corporate network. Scores can be benchmarked internally across roles or locations and externally against aggregated industry data. Because perceptions of fairness are dynamic, the VFI is designed for periodic reassessment, providing a baseline and tracking progress over time.
